By analyzing DNA in forest mosses at the Ducke Reserve, scientists at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) found that Ophiocordyceps has a hidden plant-dwelling stage that had gone unnoticed for centuries of scientific study.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world, another team was peering into the deep past. At Northwestern University, researchers used chemical clues trapped inside microscopic 113-million-year-old fossils to crack a Cretaceous cold case: volcanic eruptions from the Kerguelen Plateau spewed carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, acidified the oceans, and triggered one of the largest extinction events in the history of planktic foraminifera—tiny shell-building organisms that help regulate Earth's carbon cycle. The study, published in Science, marks the fifth Northwestern-led investigation linking volcanic activity to ocean acidification, revealing a recurring pattern that played out across more than 60 million years.

Back on solid ground—even if it's not quite of this Earth—scientists at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology are developing the emerging field of "planetary pedology." As reported in the Soil Science Society of America Journal, researchers have proposed the first classification framework for lunar soils, expertise that took Earth scientists more than a century to develop but could now guide future moon missions in selecting sites for construction, resource extraction, and even growing food.

When Stone Tablets Tell Stories

At Okayama University of Science, Assistant Professor Ryuji Takasaki's team examined gastroliths—stones worn smooth inside dinosaur abdominal cavities—to understand how these ancient creatures digested food. Scherz of the Natural History Museum Denmark and colleagues described seven entirely new species of diamond frogs—creatures so elusive they spend most of their lives beneath leaf litter. "Diamond frogs have been hiding their diversity beneath our feet," Scherz noted. These discoveries reveal that the island's amphibian diversity is even more extraordinary than previously imagined.

Back in the lab, new technologies are enabling scientists to see what was previously invisible. At the University of Vienna, researchers developed strategies for simultaneously measuring thousands of microbial and host proteins in the gut—transforming microbiome research from identifying "musicians in an orchestra" to actually hearing the music they play. And at the University of Hamburg and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, scientists discovered that ultrafast X-ray pulses can partially reverse the damage they cause, producing brighter, more accurate images without destroying the sample.

Perhaps most remarkably, researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem uncovered that the brain itself helps protect fertility from heat-induced damage. In studies of the microscopic worm Caenorhabditis elegans, they found that neurons communicate with reproductive cells using RNA-based signaling—preparing and protecting the germline before environmental stress causes damage.

What unites these disparate discoveries? Each began with researchers asking a question nobody had thought to ask—or finding an answer where everyone assumed there was only silence. The zombie fungus was hiding in mosses. The dinosaur's stomach stones held behavioral clues. The brain was shielding fertility all along.

It's about realizing the questions were larger than we thought—and that the world is more intricate, more surprising, and more full of hidden connections than our maps currently show.
