For decades, scientists called MYC "undruggable." One of the most powerful drivers of cancer growth, it seemed untouchable — until researchers at MD Anderson found a back door. By identifying a vulnerability in the relationship between MYC and a partner protein called GSPT1, they built a first-in-class therapy, GT19630, that wipes out both proteins at once, showing strong activity against leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, including treatment-resistant cases. A cancer signal in your spit

At Yonsei University in Seoul, researcher Jihyun F. Kim wondered something most of us never would: do oral microbes reach the gut differently in people with cancer? His team recruited 507 volunteers to donate both oral and fecal samples, and found that the makeup of oral microbes carries signals associated with stomach and colorectal cancer. The study, published in Cell Host & Microbe, points toward a future where a simple mouth rinse becomes a less invasive screening tool for gastrointestinal cancers. "Many species of microbes associated with the mouth are also present in the gut and may flourish there," Kim said.

The vaccine era arrives for melanoma

Meanwhile, pharma giants Merck and Moderna reported that their personalized mRNA vaccine, Intismeran, plus the immunotherapy Keytruda, extended the time before melanoma returned in a late-stage trial of 1,137 high-risk patients. Earlier data presented at ASCO showed the combo halved the risk of melanoma returning after five years. It's a reminder that the mRNA revolution didn't end with COVID — it's just beginning.

Reading the biology of age

At the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, researchers analyzing genomic and immune data from 14,246 lung cancer patients found something striking: nearly 58% of younger adults had genetic alterations that could be matched with targeted therapies, versus about 45% of patients 55 and older. Presented at the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer in Seoul, the finding suggests age itself is a clue to tumor biology — and to which treatment path will work.

Precision at every scale

The precision trend runs through every field. Mayo Clinic researchers, publishing in Gastroenterology, now estimate that a pancreatic cyst with one worrisome feature carries about a 2% chance of progressing to cancer within three years — rising to 18% with three or more. That helps doctors decide whether to monitor or operate, sparing patients unnecessary surgery. "We must really know what is likely to become cancer and what is not," said lead author Shounak Majumder.

Even recovery is getting personalized. University of Surrey researchers used AI on the records of 12,701 heart attack survivors to map three distinct recovery paths — and found the smoking-related group had a markedly higher mortality risk, meaning clinicians can intervene sooner. At Pitt, deep brain stimulation of the motor thalamus is helping patients with traumatic brain injury regain control of facial and tongue muscles for speech and swallowing. And across the Atlantic, ISGlobal researchers found that climate patterns can predict leishmaniasis outbreaks up to a year ahead in North Africa.
