When Avory Woolery saw a man drowning in a Kentucky apartment pool last week, he didn't hesitate. He was only 11 years old, but he knew what he had to do.
Avory was at the swimming pool in his apartment complex when he noticed something was wrong. A man had fallen unconscious in the water, and nobody else was stepping in to help.
"No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles," Avory told local news. "I went underwater. I grabbed him up."
The young boy dove beneath the surface and pulled the man to safety. Once on solid ground, a friend of the man began performing CPR until emergency responders arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital, where WKYT reported he remained in critical condition.
What makes Avory's actions even more remarkable is what he said next. Looking back on the moment, he explained that he simply couldn't let someone die if he had the power to help.
"I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today," Avory said. "He's a human being. He should be treated as such."
Avory's father, Mr. Woolery, said he was deeply proud of his son's quick thinking and bravery. When he arrived on the scene, another person walking by even thanked him directly. "Somebody said, 'Thank you, you taught him how to swim,'" Mr. Woolery recalled.
At 11 years old, Avory showed the kind of courage that many adults struggle to find. He didn't wait for someone else to act. He put on his goggles, dove in, and brought a man back to shore. In doing so, he reminded everyone around him that courage isn't about age — it's about choosing to help when help is needed.
