When the 247 households at a Hyde Park apartment complex plug in their electric cars tonight, they won't have to hunt for a public charging station or rearrange their schedules. That's because Loop Global recently finished installing 64 Level 2 EV chargers at the building — one of the biggest such projects for a multifamily complex in the Boston neighborhood.
The chargers are located inside the building's secured parking garage, where residents and their visitors can plug in anytime, day or night. One of the biggest benefits of at-home charging is convenience: people can top up their batteries while they sleep or during long parking stretches, without competing for a public charger.
The project took roughly one year from start to finish. Design work and applications for government incentives began in early 2025. Construction crews broke ground in October 2025, and the chargers were fully installed, tested, and ready by early 2026.
A key reason the project moved forward was financial support from Eversource, the local utility. Eversource incentive programs covered about 70% of the total project costs, including the charging infrastructure for all 64 ports and a portion of the hardware itself. Rob Kutner, Chief Commercial Officer at Loop Global, said the incentives made the project viable for the building's developers.
The installation matters because EV charging at apartment buildings and condos has lagged behind other types of housing. Many EV owners who live in multifamily buildings rely on public charging stations, which can be inconvenient and sometimes far from home. When apartment complexes add chargers, it removes a real barrier for people thinking about switching to an electric vehicle.
In Massachusetts, electric vehicle adoption has been growing, but charger installation hasn't kept pace — especially in dense residential areas. Experts say projects like this one in Hyde Park show that change is happening, even if slowly.
Loop Global's network monitors the chargers around the clock to help ensure they stay reliable. Residents can check charger availability and status through the company's system.
For now, the chargers are for residents and their guests only — they're tucked inside a secured garage, not accessible to the general public. But for the people who live there, having an EV charger steps away from their parking spot might make owning an electric car feel a lot more realistic.
