On August 12, 2026, the moon will glide directly between Earth and the sun, blocking out our star for a maximum of two minutes and 18 seconds along a path stretching 5,130 miles from the North Pole to the Mediterranean. For the first time in more than a century, mainland Spain will experience a total solar eclipse — and scientists are calling it a rare chance to study our atmosphere while millions gaze skyward.
The eclipse shadow will begin near the North Pole, race south over Greenland and Iceland, and reach maximum darkness off Iceland's west coast. By the time it sweeps across Portugal and into Spain, totality will have shortened to roughly one minute — still enough to turn day into dusk and drop temperatures noticeably. The whole journey from start to finish takes just over an hour.
Even those far from the direct path can catch a glimpse. Dublin will see 94 percent of the sun vanish behind the moon; Oslo will get 83 percent coverage. Farther afield, Montreal will watch an 18 percent bite taken out of the sun, New York just 9 percent, and Norfolk, Virginia a mere 2 percent.
But the August 12 sky offers even more. Before dawn, six planets will arc across the heavens. After nightfall, the Perseid meteor shower will peak under a new moon — and some of the brighter shooting stars might even streak across totality, photobombing the eclipse.
Scientists are using the event for real research too. Two ESA space telescopes will observe the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona. U.S. college teams will launch more than 60 high-altitude balloons from Spain and Iceland to measure how the brief darkness affects Earth's atmosphere — they launched 10 times that number during the 2024 North American eclipse. Researchers will also chase totality from a NASA high-altitude plane, extending the darkness to nearly three minutes.
"A couple of minutes isn't a lot of time, but it's still plenty to affect the atmosphere and to make that cold, dark shadow of the moon on Earth," said Angela Des Jardins of Montana State University, who leads the NASA balloon project.
For Michael Zeiler, an eclipse mapmaker, the real treasure would be catching the northern lights during totality. He'll be sailing in a Greenland fjord on a cruise ship, pointing a video camera north in hopes of capturing any aurora that appears.
"What gets me excited is viewing rare phenomena," Zeiler said.
The European Space Agency will host a live webcast from Spain's Astrophysical Observatory, along with a public celebration in Leon. NASA and the Virtual Telescope Project will provide their own coverage.
"For me, it's not just a scientific moment. It's not just an incredible alignment of heavenly bodies. It's also a very human moment," said ESA's director of science Carole Mundell. "It's a real human connection between us with our feet planted on the Earth and the cosmos."
The show is far from over. Next year, an even longer eclipse — lasting up to six minutes — will arc from Spain across North Africa and the Middle East.
