In the final moments of the World Cup's third-place match, Jude Bellingham did something remarkable — and then immediately made sure his teammate got the spotlight instead.
The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder scored his seventh goal of the tournament in England's 6-4 win over France, becoming the first Englishman ever to reach that milestone at a single World Cup. Bellingham had been on the pitch for less than three minutes when he seized his moment: picking up the ball at the halfway line, driving forward past a defender, and calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner with the very last kick of the game.
"He has such confidence in his own ability," former England midfielder Danny Murphy said during the match broadcast. "The patience, the skill, the shot. What a goal from England's best player."
But the goal almost never happened. Twelve minutes earlier, England had won a penalty — a chance for Bellingham to extend his tally. Instead, he handed the ball to Bukayo Saka, who had already scored twice and was chasing a hat-trick.
"No, Jude was never taking it," Saka explained after the match. "He was the first one to say go and get your hat-trick, so none of them came to distract me. I was always going to take it."
Saka went on to complete his hat-trick, finishing the game with three goals of his own. Together, the two young players — both in their early twenties — helped England end the tournament on a high note.
Bellingham's seven goals put him ahead of two legends: Gary Lineker, who scored six at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, and his own teammate Harry Kane, who also netted six at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and matched that total again this tournament.
