The cleanup project coincided with a heat wave that shattered UK temperature records for May, disrupting schedules and testing the resolve of the nearly 300 volunteers who descended on the hillside for a two- to three-week restoration effort. They spent their days removing the old, weathered chalk layer and bagging it, then walking down the hillside with chalk-filled sacks slung over their shoulders. A fundraising campaign raised £330,000—roughly $444,500—specifically to purchase over 130 hectares of surrounding land. This expansion of protected territory has "high archaeological value," according to the National Trust, and opens possibilities for sustained research into the giant's true origins and the landscape that shaped it.
Those origins remain mysterious. Recent research by the National Trust in 2021 revealed the figure was most likely carved during the late Anglo-Saxon period, between 700 and 1100 AD—making it far older than many had assumed. Yet its purpose endures as speculation. Some researchers theorize it represents an ancient fertility symbol; others propose it depicts the Greek hero Hercules, suggesting Classical influences on Anglo-Saxon artists.
The newly protected land surrounding the giant offers a chance to move beyond guesswork. Archaeological exploration of the surrounding area could yield artifacts, settlement patterns, or other clues that finally answer the question of why someone—perhaps a entire community—undertook the immense labor of carving a 55-meter figure into a hillside more than a thousand years ago. For now, the restored giant stands gleaming white against the Dorset landscape, its secrets intact but its future—and the future of the landscape around it—finally secured for generations of researchers, visitors, and curious locals to come.
