For centuries, lecturers have stood behind the same old wooden podiums, often suffering in silence as neck and back pain crept in during long teaching sessions. But researchers have now designed a smarter lectern that could finally make that pain a thing of the past.
A team led by Samira Ranjbar Naserabadi and colleagues created a new ergonomic lectern based on careful measurements of university instructors' bodies and how they actually use these speaking stands. Their work, published in the International Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics, found that the redesigned lectern significantly reduces the risk of workplace injuries.
University lecturers face a tough combination: hours of standing, computer work at desks, and the awkward postures that come from teaching from a fixed podium. This mix often leads to musculoskeletal disorders — injuries to muscles, joints and tendons — particularly affecting the neck, shoulders and lower back.
The researchers recruited 34 instructors and first studied how they used regular lecterns. Then they built a prototype based on anthropometric data — precise measurements of human body size and proportions — along with real-world working patterns.
To measure results, the team used two standard tools. The first, called REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), scores posture-related injury risk on a scale where lower numbers mean less danger. Instructors using the new ergonomic lectern scored a 3, compared to 4 with conventional models. They also tested usability using the System Usability Scale (SUS), a questionnaire that rates how easy and effective a product is to use. The ergonomic lectern scored well above conventional lecterns on that measure too.
In plain terms: the new design helped instructors stand in safer positions and felt simpler and more intuitive to operate.
The implications stretch beyond individual comfort. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, and educators are particularly vulnerable. Small changes to everyday equipment — a properly sized lectern, adjusted to fit the human body — could prevent chronic pain before it starts.
Researchers hope this user-centred approach becomes standard practice for classroom furniture design. If a few measurements can make standing lecturers healthier, the same thinking could reshape offices, factories and healthcare settings too.
