Tom Davidson of North Carolina had never driven an electric vehicle before. Then he won one. Now he fills it with camping gear for mountain getaways and beach trips, raving about the power and excitement of his Rivian R1S SUV. "The performance is unlike anything I've ever owned," he says. His story is one of three happy endings last year — and another round of chances starts now.
The CCAN Action Fund, a clean energy nonprofit that pushes for electric vehicles on Capitol Hill and in state governments, is holding its eighth annual EV raffle. This year's grand prize lets the winner pick from seven different electric vehicles, including the adventure-ready Rivian R1T truck or R1S SUV, the long-range Lucid Air or Lucid Gravity, or a sleek electric Porsche Taycan, Macan, or Cayenne. Second prize offers a Volkswagen ID. Buzz van, a Hyundai Ioniq, or the new Rivian R2. Third prize is a Chevrolet Bolt with a 262-mile range.
Here's the part that makes this news: over 4,500 tickets are still available, and the drawing happens July 30. That means people who buy now have better odds than in years past. Each $200 ticket gives buyers three separate chances to win, and the group even covers state and federal taxes on the prizes.
Transportation — cars, trucks, and buses — makes up nearly 30 percent of America's climate pollution. CCAN Action Fund's goal is to put more electric vehicles on the road, which cuts that pollution to nearly zero. Every ticket bought supports the group's work lobbying for clean energy policies at the national and state level.
Justin K. of Minnesota won the second prize last year: a Volkswagen ID. Buzz. He says driving electric is just more fun. "Less noise, no exhaust, and way more power!" he told the group. He takes it camping and says people constantly wave and smile at the unique-looking van.
With gas prices bouncing around this summer, an electric vehicle means never worrying about fuel costs again. The group says anyone can win, and the winners from last year prove it — a retired pilot in North Carolina and a tech worker in Minnesota are now driving vehicles they never expected to own.
The raffle ends July 30. Buyers who enter now get three chances at prizes worth tens of thousands of dollars, while also helping a nonprofit fight for cleaner air and a cooler planet.
