The European Medicines Agency has approved the pill form of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, marking a significant shift in how Europeans access weight management treatment. This is the first oral version of a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) drug to reach the European market, a category that has already transformed obesity care in the United States.

The approval matters because it removes a major barrier to treatment: the need for regular injections. For patients who have avoided medication because of needle anxiety or the inconvenience of weekly shots, a simple daily pill offers a path forward. Weight management affects millions across Europe, and expanding the tools available to treat it—while giving people real choice in how they take their medication—addresses a genuine public health need.

The European Medicines Agency recommended extending Wegovy's marketing authorization to include the oral formulation alongside the existing injectable version. The timing follows closely on the US Food and Drug Administration's approval of the pill in December, where uptake has been remarkable: Novo Nordisk reports that prescriptions have surged to over 200,000 a week. That momentum suggests strong patient and physician interest in an oral alternative.

The new Wegovy pill will be available only to adults in the EU, while the injectable version can be prescribed to patients as young as 12. The company still requires final clearance from the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, though regulatory experts consider this step a formality given the medicines agency's recommendation. Novo Nordisk expects to begin selling the pill in other markets during the second quarter of this year, with individual EU member states setting their own prices.

This approval comes as Novo Nordisk navigates intensifying competition in the weight management space. The Danish pharmaceutical company faced pressure last year when US rival Eli Lilly launched Zepbound, its own GLP-1 treatment, prompting Novo Nordisk to undertake a restructuring effort. The pill version represents a strategic move to maintain its market position and offer patients—and physicians—additional reasons to choose Wegovy over competing options.

The arrival of oral GLP-1 drugs in Europe reflects a broader shift in how obesity is treated globally. These medications work by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar, and their effectiveness in helping people lose weight has made them among the most sought-after drugs in recent years. What was once considered a niche pharmaceutical category has become mainstream. For patients across the EU who have been waiting for easier access or who have resisted injectable therapy, the Wegovy pill represents a real expansion of possibility—and a sign that innovation in weight management treatment continues to accelerate.
