Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe isn't just thinking about the next match — he's already building toward next season. In a strategic shift that turned heads at St. James' Park, Howe left Anthony Gordon on the bench for the second consecutive match, choosing instead to use the game as a testing ground for the squad's emerging talent.n
The decision came even as Newcastle dealt with a depleted right-back position. Kieran Trippier — the only fit recognized right-back at the club — was also left out of the starting eleven, despite his experience. The shortage followed injuries to Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento, leaving Lewis Hall, naturally a left-back, to fill in on the opposite side before Trippier eventually came on for captain Bruno Guimaraes deep in injury time.
But rather than see this as a concession, Howe framed it as an investment. "We have got one eye on the future," he said after the match, where former midfielder Elliot Anderson cancelled out Harvey Barnes' opener for Newcastle. "That's been clear with some of the decisions that I've made with the team because we want to see some players. We want to see how they are going to grow into the team."
The strategy paid immediate dividends. Jacob Ramsey, brought on from the bench, drew particular praise from his manager. "I thought Jacob Ramsey was magnificent when he came on. He really made a big difference. As did Harvey. So it was great to see players stepping up and grabbing their opportunities when they come."
It's a philosophy rooted in long-term belief — giving younger or less-established players real game time against competitive opposition, rather than waiting for ideal circumstances. "It's our duty to try to look to the future and see what the new team is going to look like next year," Howe said.
The approach reflects a broader trend in football: managers using the tail end of seasons, especially those out of title contention, to blood new talent and assess squad depth. For Newcastle's next generation, Sunday's match wasn't just another game — it was an audition for bigger roles ahead.
