When Osea Giuntella and his colleagues first tracked how college students were sleeping, they found a troubling pattern. On average, students were getting just 6.6 hours of sleep per night. Half of them did not go to bed until after 1 a.m., and one in four stayed up past 2 a.m. Only 43 percent managed to get the recommended minimum of seven hours on school nights. The researchers wondered: what if a small cash reward could change that?

The answer, it turns out, is a transcript worth celebrating.

In one of the largest sleep experiments ever conducted on college students, Giuntella of the University of Pittsburgh, Silvia Saccardo of Carnegie Mellon, and Sally Sadoff of UC San Diego recruited more than 1,100 students across three universities. They equipped participants with Fitbit trackers and a custom smartphone app that sent bedtime reminders, showed real-time sleep data, and delivered immediate cash payments of about $4.75 each time a student logged seven or more hours of sleep. The money added up quickly, but the real surprise was what happened to their grades.

Students who received the sleep incentives earned 0.075 to 0.089 higher grade points that semester — a meaningful jump roughly equivalent to doubling the effect of traditional financial-aid incentive programs, yet costing less than one-quarter as much. The gains were strongest among freshmen, who were experiencing their first taste of full independence, and in STEM courses and midday classes, where sharp thinking matters most.

The study, published in the Journal of Political Economy, also found that students kept sleeping better even after the money stopped. During the experiment, the share of nights with seven or more hours of sleep jumped by 26 percent, adding roughly 19 extra minutes of sleep on weeknights. After the incentives ended, students still gained about 8 extra minutes per night. They went to bed at more regular times, spent less time staring at screens late at night, and reported feeling better able to handle stress. Their total study time did not change, but they shifted some of it from late nights to mornings.

Giuntella called the project one of the most comprehensive behavioral field experiments ever conducted on sleep. By combining wearable technology, real-time rewards, and psychological surveys, his team was able to watch habits form in real time. The findings suggest that universities do not need expensive tutoring programs or elaborate interventions to help students succeed. Sometimes, all it takes is helping them get to bed a little earlier.

"Our results show that helping students sleep more — and sleep better — can boost academic performance just as effectively as traditional academic interventions, but at a fraction of the cost," Giuntella said.
