Imagine enough solar panels to power a small country, paired with batteries big enough to keep the lights running through the night. That's exactly what's happening in Abu Dhabi, where construction just started on the world's first gigascale renewable energy project that can deliver clean electricity around the clock — rain or shine, day or night.

Masdar, the United Arab Emirates' clean energy company, announced financial close on the project in late October 2025. The numbers are staggering: a 5.2 gigawatt solar installation will work alongside a 19 gigawatt-hour battery storage system. For comparison, a typical home might use a few kilowatts at any given moment, so 5,200 kilowatts of solar power could theoretically serve thousands of homes. The batteries can store enough energy to keep that power flowing even when the sun isn't shining.

The project will deliver 1 gigawatt of continuous clean power — essentially reliable green electricity every hour of every day. This solves one of the biggest challenges with renewable energy: the sun sets, the wind stops, and the power stops. Not anymore.

"Financial close demonstrates that large-scale renewable energy projects capable of delivering round-the-clock power have evolved from technical ambition to commercially bankable infrastructure," Masdar stated.

The $6.1 billion project drew financing from 13 major international and local banks, including BNP Paribas, HSBC, Bank of China, and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. The consortium provided a $5.1 billion financing package — a strong vote of confidence that massive clean energy projects can make financial sense. Masdar itself contributed $1 billion in equity funding. The project is being developed alongside Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), Abu Dhabi's state-backed utility.

Construction began in October 2025, with completion targeted for 2027 — just two years for something of unprecedented scale. The project also points toward solving a modern problem: powering data centers and artificial intelligence, which consume enormous amounts of electricity around the clock.

Masdar already manages more than 65 gigawatts of renewable energy projects globally and aims to reach 100 gigawatts by 2030. The Abu Dhabi gigascale project sets a new standard for what clean energy can accomplish — and proves it's no longer just a dream, but a real investment cities and countries can bank on.
