Desert tortoises are endangered, meaning they need careful protection. Scientists have long needed to measure these hatchlings' internal body temperatures to understand how they survive in the scorching Mojave Desert. The traditional method meant physically picking up each baby tortoise and inserting a thermometer into an opening called the cloaca — a process that can frighten and stress such small, fragile animals.
The research team, led by Thomas A. Radzio and colleagues, wanted to find a gentler way. Their solution: a handheld infrared thermal camera. Instead of touching the tortoises at all, researchers simply point the device at a hatchling from a short distance away. The camera reads the heat radiating from the animal's shell, then calculates what its internal temperature likely is.
The study, published in the journal Conservation Physiology, tested the camera on hatchling Mojave desert tortoises under various outdoor conditions. The results showed the infrared method gave reliable temperature estimates in most situations — matching up well with traditional thermometer readings without requiring any handling.
