Perhaps most importantly, Descheemaeker's team found that different sports demand different approaches. Gymnastics benefits from early specialization. Other disciplines—many of them—actually suffer from it, leading to early burnout and lost potential. A one-size-fits-all policy doesn't just miss opportunities; it damages them. The research argues for what Descheemaeker calls "a differentiated approach by sport," allowing each discipline to develop youth according to its own realities rather than borrowed templates.
