Alice Powell will lead BBC Sport's Formula 1 commentary for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this weekend, joined by co-commentator Abbi Pulling in a historic moment: the first all-female commentary line-up for a Grand Prix on British radio.
The milestone matters not as tokenism, but as evidence of how motorsport is fundamentally shifting. Powell, 33, brings two decades of racing experience across multiple categories. Pulling, 23, is the reigning 2024 F1 Academy champion, currently competing in GB3—a single-seater category just one rung below Formula 2 and Formula 3, the final two steps before Formula 1. She is also the rookie and simulator driver for Nissan's Formula E team. These are not newcomers handed microphones for optics; they are athletes and insiders whose expertise commands trust.
Powell will step in for regular lead commentator Harry Benjamin, who is covering the race for Sky F1. She spoke about the role with the kind of candour that makes the moment feel genuine. "I'm really excited to lead my first F1 commentary, alongside Abbi," she said. "As well as dreaming of becoming a racing driver when I was a kid, I also wanted to become a commentator. Who would have thought that six-year-old Alice, who would pretend to be Murray Walker commentating on my own little race on my bike in the garden, would be having the chance to lead a BBC commentary many years later?"
Pulling emphasized that the breakthrough is rooted in substance, not symbol-checking. "It's incredible to be doing Barcelona comms with BBC 5 live, especially as it's an all-female line-up with Alice and me," she said. "The important thing as well is that it's not just to tick a box. It is down to our experiences and involvement with the sport that we're in these positions, which continues to show how much sport is evolving. It's becoming more widely accepted not to just have women within the sport in these roles, but also to have the knowledge and be trusted by the listeners."
Pulling's recent form has been sharp. Last month at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps circuit, she secured her maiden GB3 victory, starting from pole position—a statement of pace and consistency that underscores why she belongs in an expert commentary position.
The BBC delivers comprehensive F1 coverage throughout the season, with live commentary from every race weekend on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds. Listeners can access the Chequered Flag podcast—available as visualised versions on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport YouTube channel—for expert insight and reaction from leading voices in the sport. The extended Chequered Flag Extra podcast invites fans into the conversation with debates, race rankings and perspectives from dedicated superfans. For those wanting real-time detail, the BBC Sport website and app provide live text commentary, breaking news and expert analysis from every grand prix.
This Barcelona commentary represents a natural evolution: two women with genuine credentials stepping into roles they have earned. In their own words and track records, Powell and Pulling have already made the case that this is not a breakthrough worth celebrating because it is rare—but because it reflects where motorsport is heading.
