For three years, a tiny piece of glue held a 2-kilogram weight underwater without cracking, peeling, or giving way. No superhero adhesive from a cartoon lab — this is real science, developed by researchers in China who just published their work in the journal Nature Communications.

Most glues fall apart when things get wet. Water forms a thin film on every surface, blocking the adhesive from touching what it's trying to stick. But these scientists created something different: a superglue called BP16TPB that repels water and bonds in seconds.

The secret lies in a clever trick involving a special liquid called dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO for short. When the researchers mix their ionic liquid adhesive with DMSO and apply it to something underwater, it triggers something called Marangoni flow. That's a rapid motion that pushes the water away from the surface, letting the glue make direct contact. Within seconds, the DMSO flows outward and the molecules rearrange themselves into a tough, water-resistant bond.

The numbers are impressive. On ceramic, the glue reached a bonding strength of 1.1 megapascals after just 10 seconds. Five minutes later, that climbed to 1.3 megapascals. It also stuck firmly to copper, epoxy resin, and polyamide — materials used in everything from plumbing to electronics. And it worked not just in plain water, but in acidic water, alkaline water, and salty water too.

Perhaps most remarkably, the glue can be recycled. When researchers soaked the bonded pieces in DMSO, the adhesive dissolved back into liquid form. They then reapplied it to new surfaces. They repeated this cycle up to eight times, and the glue showed no drop in how well it stuck. That reusability makes it stand out from typical adhesives that get used once and thrown away.

The potential uses are wide-ranging. Underwater pipes that leak could be sealed without draining them first. Ships and offshore platforms could be repaired right in the water. Sensors for monitoring ocean health could be attached to structures more easily.

There are still hurdles. The glue loses strength at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius (158 Fahrenheit), which limits where it could be used. But the researchers are continuing to refine their work, and with the long-term durability they've already shown, this recyclable underwater glue could one day make many messy, difficult repair jobs much simpler.
