After nearly a decade of searching through Taiwan's misty highlands, a team of dedicated tree seekers has crowned their discovery: an 84.1-meter-tall Taiwania fir known as "The Heaven Sword," now recognized as East Asia's tallest tree. The find caps a remarkable scientific quest that began in 2014, when researchers from the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute set out to locate and document the island's most elusive giants—trees towering over 80 meters in a landscape where such specimens are vanishingly rare.

Taiwan's rugged geography makes it one of the few places on Earth capable of nurturing these sky-piercing champions. The island, historically known as Formosa, is a dense patchwork of ecosystems, with 258 mountain peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in elevation and approximately 60 percent of its 36,000 square kilometers still forested. Within those forests dwell an estimated 950 million trees representing around 5,000 plant species, creating carbon-dense environments that are among the world's richest. The Indigenous Rukai people, who have lived among these giants for generations, call them "the trees that hit the moon"—a poetic name that captures both their soaring height and cultural significance.

The search itself became a lesson in adaptation. Early expeditions, including a 2014 expedition to the Cilan conservation area, succeeded in locating three legendary Taiwania firs known as the "Chilan Three Sisters," with the tallest reaching 69.3 meters. International attention followed when Australian climbers from The Tree Projects traveled to Taiwan in 2017 to photograph these giants, bringing global awareness to the island's hidden treasures. Yet as the team ventured deeper into more remote regions near Mt. Benya—a sacred site for Indigenous peoples situated near Great Ghost Lake—they confronted a humbling truth: identifying the world's tallest trees by eye alone was nearly impossible. Dense, multi-layered forest canopies deceived even trained observers, and expeditions requiring four days of heavy hiking could only reach and climb individual specimens, one at a time.

The breakthrough came through technology. Partnering with remote sensing specialists from National Cheng Kung University, the Taiwan tree seekers deployed LiDAR—Light Detection and Ranging—an aircraft-based laser scanning system that could survey millions of acres at once. By transmitting laser pulses from above and measuring how long the light took to bounce back, LiDAR generated highly detailed 3D maps of the landscape, revealing tree heights with precision that ground-based methods could never achieve. This sophisticated approach proved essential given the scale of the challenge: nine and a half million trees were scattered across deep, inaccessible valleys, making manual searching feel like hunting for a needle in a haystack.

The team's persistence and innovation have now yielded their greatest prize. The Heaven Sword stands as a testament not only to Taiwan's ecological richness but also to the power of interdisciplinary collaboration—combining the expertise of professional climbers, ecologists, geologists, and remote sensing specialists in service of a shared mission.
