In Shenzhen, China, a company called Jackery is building portable batteries that are getting safer, lighter, and longer-lasting — and a recent test by CleanTechnica shows just how far the technology has come. The device in question is the Jackery HomePower H1000 v2, a compact 1 kilowatt-hour battery pack (that's enough to power a TV and a few lights for hours, or charge a laptop dozens of times) that weighs just 23.4 pounds. For comparison, industry standards used to hover around 25 pounds per kilowatt-hour, so this marks real progress.
The biggest shift in these batteries isn't just size — it's safety. The new generation uses lithium-ferro-phosphate (LFP) cells instead of the older nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry that powered early portable power stations. LFP cells can last over 20 years, compared to about 10 years for NMC cells. More importantly, they won't overheat or catch fire if damaged — a reassuring feature when you're relying on these packs on camping trips, during power outages, or while running appliances off your truck.
Jackery expects the HomePower H1000 v2 to still hold 70 percent of its original charge after 6,000 full discharge cycles. That's the equivalent of plugging it in and emptying it every single day for more than 16 years. Even after all that use, it would still work — just with somewhat less capacity.
Charging is quick, too. Plug it into a standard wall outlet and it refills in around 50 minutes. For off-grid adventurers, pairing it with Jackery's bifacial 200-watt solar panels — which absorb sunlight from both sides — can recharge the battery in just 3.3 hours. The panels can even pull energy from light reflected off surfaces like a white RV roof or sandy beach.
Despite its compact size, the H1000 v2 doesn't skimp on power. It delivers a steady 1,500 watts of alternating current (AC) — the kind your home appliances use — with short bursts up to 3,000 watts. That means it can handle a single-burner induction cooktop, which draws serious electricity, something many smaller portable stations can't do.
Jackery is one of the pioneers in portable power stations, helping popularize the idea of solar generators for emergency backup and outdoor adventures. Their Shenzhen headquarters and factory sit at the heart of China's battery and solar manufacturing industry. The company now offers their H1000 v2 in different colors, including a practical off-white "Dune" option that's more forgiving on muddy trails.
For families preparing for storms, weekend campers, or anyone who wants backup power that's easy to grab and go, these new stations represent a meaningful step forward in accessible, clean energy technology.
