Rivian began public customer deliveries of its R2 electric SUV this week—a carefully orchestrated rollout of an electric vehicle engineered to reach a wider audience than the company's pricier R1. The R2 Performance with Launch Package, the first trim available to order, starts at $57,990, but Rivian has already charted a path to its true mass-market price point: $44,990 for the base model arriving in summer 2027.
For an electric vehicle market increasingly crowded with options, the R2 represents a deliberate strategy toward affordability without sacrificing the premium engineering Rivian has become known for. The vehicle was announced in March 2024, and since then has undergone intensive testing across North America—from scorching deserts to frozen tundras, with development vehicles accumulating tens of thousands of miles in temperatures ranging from minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees. That rigor shows in the specifications: the R2 Performance produces 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in as quick as 3.6 seconds, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles on a single charge.
Built on an all-new midsize platform, the R2 weighs nearly 2,000 pounds less than Rivian's R1 while sitting on a shorter 115.6-inch wheelbase—a design that makes it nimble for city driving without surrendering the off-road capability baked into Rivian's DNA. It offers 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25-degree approach angle, and a 26-degree departure angle. Inside, the R2 provides 40.9 inches of front headroom and 40.4 inches of rear legroom, with 90.1 cubic feet of total storage when the 40/20/40 folding rear seats are lowered—enough room for five large suitcases, three backpacks, and a stroller.
The R2 Performance with Launch Package includes Autonomy+, Rivian's hands-free assisted driving system compatible with 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada, along with dual-motor all-wheel drive, semi-active suspension, and a tow package rated for 4,400 pounds. Rivian is rolling out trim levels strategically: the R2 Premium trim arrives in late 2026 at $53,990, followed by the Standard trim's rear-wheel-drive Long Range version in early 2027 starting at $48,490.
Existing R2 reservation holders will begin receiving invitations to configure and order on a rolling basis, with priority determined largely by when the reservation was made and delivery location. Current Rivian owners get accelerated timing, while customers with expiring leases can provide that information for consideration. Once an invitation arrives, buyers have 2 to 6 weeks to take delivery. By the end of June, Rivian will provide all reservation holders with an estimate of their order invitation timeline.
This measured approach mirrors how Tesla has launched new models—maximizing revenue from premium trims first while the company races toward profitability. For Rivian, the R2 represents more than a new model; it's a statement that electric vehicles engineered for real capability can also reach toward mainstream pricing, potentially expanding the audience for premium EVs beyond early adopters willing to spend over $60,000.
