For the first time since the year Tony Hawk landed the 900 and the world held its breath at millennium's end, three British tennis players have fought their way through qualifying and into the Wimbledon main draw. Ollie Tarvet, Billy Harris and Max Basing each won their decisive matches at Roehampton on Friday, delivering a moment that longtime followers of British tennis have been waiting more than 25 years to witness.
Tarvet, just 22 years old, capped a remarkable week by defeating Greece's Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 — his third win of the qualifying tournament. The victory carries extra weight because it makes him only the third British player in history to qualify for Wimbledon in consecutive years. He first broke through in 2024, reaching the second round before a straight-sets defeat to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Back then, Tarvet was still studying at the University of San Diego, and American college rules meant he couldn't immediately claim his full £99,000 prize money. Now, having graduated and turned professional, he will take home at least £80,000 — the first-round minimum.
"I'm definitely very overwhelmed right now, but the main emotion for me is happiness," Tarvet told BBC Sport. "I think I have come a long way from where I qualified last year. I think I had some challenges as well, which makes these victories sweeter."
Harris, 31, nearly stumbled out of contention after dropping the opening set 1-6 to China's Yi Zhou, but he steadied himself to win the next three sets and close out a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreak in the second. Basing, playing on a wildcard, completed the British treble with a thrilling five-set win over Switzerland's Remy Bertola. Not everything was celebratory on the day — former British number one Heather Watson fell in the women's qualifying draw to top seed Maria Timofeeva — but the overall picture was unmistakably bright.
When the draw is made on Friday, 21 British players will learn their first-round opponents. Two of them — Cameron Norrie, seeded 26th, and Emma Raducanu, seeded 30th — enter as legitimate threats. Wimbledon begins on Monday. And for Tarvet, Harris and Basing, the hardest part is already behind them.
