Around 3,200 years ago, great civilizations across the Eastern Mediterranean crumbled. The Mycenaeans in Greece, the Minoans on Crete, and the mighty Hittite Empire in what is now Turkey all fell into collapse within just a few generations. Scientists have long suspected severe droughts played a role, but they never fully understood what made those ancient droughts so devastating.

A new study from Stockholm University in Sweden now offers an answer: it was not just one climate event that caused the suffering, but several natural climate cycles lining up at the same time, like waves crashing together on a beach.

Doctoral student Katherine Power and her professor Qiong Zhang used a powerful climate model called EC-Earth to study what the weather was like in the Mediterranean over the past 8,000 years. Their findings, published in the journal Science Advances, reveal that while the region was gradually getting drier over thousands of years because of slow changes in Earth's orbit, the worst droughts struck when shorter climate cycles from the Atlantic Ocean and atmosphere happened to align.

"The convergence of these processes pushed the Eastern Mediterranean beyond a critical hydroclimatic threshold, reducing water availability and increasing pressure on agriculture and food security within already vulnerable societies," Power explained.

The researchers call this a lesson for our future. The Mediterranean is already known as one of the world's climate change hotspots, meaning it is especially sensitive to warming temperatures. Scientists expect the region to become both hotter and drier over the next century.

"Our findings suggest that future drought risk may depend not only on long-term human-driven warming but also on how natural variability in the Atlantic Ocean interacts with that background trend," Power said. In other words, it is not just about us changing the climate through burning fossil fuels. The ocean has its own natural rhythms that can either make things worse or, potentially, provide some relief.

By understanding how different climate processes combined to amplify droughts in the past, researchers hope to better predict what might happen in the future. It is a reminder that our planet's climate system is deeply connected — and that studying ancient civilizations might help us prepare for what is coming.
