Whenamir Ghalenoei has a word for his team's World Cup experience so far: "oppressed." The Iran head coach made that damning assessment after his squad was forced to fly into Los Angeles just hours before their opening match, then jet out of the United States the same day — all under the conditions of their visas. Now, there may be relief on the horizon. The White House is in active discussions about easing those strict travel restrictions ahead of Iran's final group match, against Egypt in Seattle on June 27. Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House's World Cup task force, confirmed the conversations in an interview with KOMO TV News, telling the station: "We are in discussions" about adjusting the timings for that Seattle fixture. The flight from Iran's base in Mexico to Seattle could take up to three hours — compared to the 30-minute hop to Los Angeles, where Iran played their first two matches. "I know that the president wants to be able to really balance the competitive balance on the field while making sure we're not compromising our national security," Giuliani said. "We want to make sure the Iranian team has the opportunity to-come in and compete."The Football Federation of Iran has formally objected to the restrictions, telling the BBC they believe such conditions are inconsistent with the principle of providingproviding equal conditions for all participating teams and may negatively affect teams' preparation processes. The federation said it plans to lodge an official complaint with FIFA through appropriate channels.Giuliani was quick to note credit where he said it was due: "What we have done for the Iranian team has been spectacular, and credit to President Trump on this." He noted that an executive order was signed to allow the team tooin andcame in to play in LA and they will again on the 21st.Whatever the outcome of these discussions, one thing is already clear:: the tournament is underway, the conversations are happening, and the world is watching how FIFA's showcase navigates the unexpected. Iran face Belgium next in Inglewood on Sunday at 20:00 BST.
