When Markus Hofmann drives his two kids to soccer practice, he usually worries about fuel costs. Soon, though, a new kind of car might make that worry disappear. Volkswagen has just unveiled the ID. Cross, an all-electric SUV that starts at just €27,995 — roughly the price of a used compact car — and can go up to 427 kilometers before needing a charge.
That range, measured using the international WLTP standard, puts the ID. Cross in striking distance of many gas-powered rivals while emitting zero pollution from the tailpipe. "The ID. Cross brings together technological expertise, clean design, impressive intricate solutions and genuine all-rounder qualities — all for excellent value for money," said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. "These are ideal conditions for a new success story from Volkswagen."
The compact five-seater isn't just affordable — it's thoughtfully designed. Buyers can choose from three power levels (85 kW, 99 kW, and 155 kW) and two battery sizes (37 kWh and 52 kWh net). The 52 kWh version delivers that 427-kilometer range, while the smaller battery keeps the price entry point accessible. When drivers do need to recharge, the fast-charging system can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 23 minutes — roughly the time it takes to grab a coffee and use the restroom.
Inside, the ID. Cross offers 475 liters of storage space, which is 20 liters more than its gas-powered sibling, the T-Cross. An extra compartment under the hood — called a "frunk" — adds another 25 liters, perfect for the charging cable or a gym bag. The dashboard features soft, fabric-covered surfaces, and the digital cockpit spans 26 centimeters diagonally, with an optional retro mode that displays classic instruments from the original Golf.
For those who want extra features, Volkswagen offers connected travel assist with automatic traffic light detection, new parking functions, adaptive suspension, premium sound systems, and massage seats — technologies usually found in more expensive vehicles. The design itself is intentionally timeless, with a friendly face, elongated roofline, and striking LED lighting signatures.
In Germany, orders are open now. And with more affordable electric options like the ID. Cross hitting the market, driving clean just became realistic for millions more families.
