The Clean Energy Revolution Is Happening Everywhere at Once — and 2026 Is Proof

President Emmanuel Macron has signed a national electrification pact involving thousands of French companies, with the stated goal of lifting domestically produced electricity to 60% of France's energy mix by 2030. As CleanTechnica reports, this plan doesn't treat clean energy as a side dish — it frames electrification as energy security, industrial policy, and household cost protection all at once. France is unusually positioned to make this argument credibly: its grid is already heavily decarbonized by nuclear power, with renewables growing on top of that foundation.

The numbers on the ground back up the ambition. In Q1 2026, plugin EVs claimed 33% of all French auto sales — up sharply from 22.9% just one year earlier. Battery electric vehicles alone hit 28.1% share, with 112,086 units sold, a 50% jump year-on-year. The Tesla Model Y led the pack with 10,670 registrations, narrowly ahead of the beloved Renault 5. Diesel-only vehicles, meanwhile, have cratered to just 2.5% of the market.

France isn't waiting for the world to catch up. It's building the road and driving on it.

From Poland to Nairobi, the Grid Is Going Green

The shift isn't confined to Western Europe. In Poland, EV charging company Eleport — which operates roughly 300 chargers in the country and about 800 across six nations including Estonia, Latvia, and Croatia — has struck a deal with Respect Energy to power all its Polish chargers with 100% renewable electricity sourced from local solar, wind, and hydroelectric stations. "This agreement was designed to combine access to 100% renewable energy with greater transparency and control," said Sebastian Ostrowski of Respect Energy.

In Africa, the transformation is arguably more profound. Over 50 companies are now active in the electric motorcycle sector across the continent, driven by rising fuel costs and growing demand for affordable transport. As CleanTechnica reports, investors are increasingly backing scalable platforms — and industry experts say funding rounds need to grow at least 10× to truly move the needle. After eight years of watching this sector grow from a handful of guys converting ICE motorcycles by hand in Nairobi, that needle is finally, visibly moving.

Mexico Quietly Hit a Milestone No One Is Talking About Enough

By the end of 2025, Mexico reached 5.165 gigawatts of distributed solar power capacity — spread across 600,368 installations nationwide. More than $13 billion has been invested in these projects, according to the National Energy Commission. The western state of Jalisco alone accounts for nearly 100,000 installations and 747 megawatts of capacity. Net metering — where grid operators pay rooftop solar owners for the excess electricity they send back — has been the quiet engine driving this growth.

This isn't a government megaproject. It's hundreds of thousands of ordinary households and businesses deciding, one rooftop at a time, that clean energy makes economic sense.

Even Old Batteries Are Getting a Second Life

Waymo's robotaxis are aging — not because they've broken down, but because the technology has moved on. So the company is doing something quietly remarkable: partnering with B2U Storage Solutions to repurpose its retired EV battery packs into clean energy storage for the local electricity grids in communities where it operates. "Waymo is championing the circular economy by transforming our retired electric vehicle batteries into clean energy storage," the company said. It's a small program with large implications — every battery that powers a neighborhood grid instead of a landfill is a proof of concept for how circular the energy economy can become.

The One Question That Still Hangs in the Air

With all of this momentum — France's 33% EV market share, Mexico's 5 gigawatts, African electric motorcycles scaling fast, used robotaxi batteries lighting up community grids — one question becomes genuinely hard to answer: why would anyone still choose coal?

As CleanTechnica notes, a $700 million US government subsidy for old coal plants was recently announced, even as red states from Wyoming to Mississippi are quietly embracing renewables because, as one analyst put it, "they cost less and come online faster." Coal is now the most expensive form of electricity generation. Solar and wind are fuel-free. The math has been settled for years.

The answer, it turns out, isn't really about energy. It's about power — political and economic — and who holds it. The encouraging truth is that the market, the ocean, the rooftops of Jalisco, and the streets of Paris are all voting the same way. The clean energy transition isn't coming.
