For the first time ever, a permit will let climate-resilient corals travel across a border — from a nursery in St Lucia to waiting coral nurseries in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The move is the work of the environmental group CLEAR Caribbean, and it could be the lifeline that St Vincent's struggling reefs have been waiting for.

Here is why it matters. Across the Caribbean, ocean heat is killing corals at a scale never seen before. The back-to-back marine heatwaves of 2023 and 2024 were the worst the region's reefs have ever endured, bleaching and killing reefs in vast numbers. The two species that built the shallow reefs for thousands of years — staghorn and elkhorn coral — were hit hardest, and very few survive today. That is a direct threat to Caribbean fisheries, beaches, and the marine tourism millions of people depend on.

The science behind the rescue is called "assisted gene flow," sometimes called genetic rescue. A landmark paper in the journal Science argued that corals need help to evolve faster than the ocean warms. The idea is simple: carefully move heat-tolerant corals from healthy populations to reefs where those tough genes are needed most, so whole reefs can pass that resilience on. It has worked for other species, and now it is being tried for corals.

What makes this permit historic is not just the science — it is the cooperation. Sharing heat-resistant corals between countries takes trust, careful safeguards against disease, and protection of genetic diversity. In Jamaica, for example, current policy does not even allow corals to be moved between parishes, out of caution. But as CLEAR Caribbean's scientists point out, in a warming ocean, an overwhelming focus on avoiding risk can itself become the greatest risk of all.

The new transboundary project is funded by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment through its International Climate Initiative and the development bank KfW. It focuses on nature-based solutions — restoring ecosystems, strengthening coastal livelihoods, and giving coral restoration a real chance in St Vincent and the Grenadines by boosting genetic variety.

The team behind the effort, Owen Day and Newton Eristhee of CLEAR Caribbean, believe the region's mindset is finally changing. They point to Jamaica's network of fish sanctuaries as a genuine Caribbean success story and a model of stewardship. That same leadership, they argue, could now help CARICOM governments agree on shared, safe rules for moving corals — getting heat-resilient genes to the reefs that need them most, before the ecosystems that feed and protect coastal communities vanish forever. The first corals to cross that border are a hopeful sign that the region is learning to move, together, with the tide.
