When 9-month-old You Ern looked at a speaker on a screen, something remarkable happened in her brain. New research shows that eye contact acts like a switch, helping babies tune in to the people around them and pick up language. Scientists at the University of Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have discovered that babies only learn a language when they can see the speaker's eyes — and that seeing those eyes makes their brainwaves sync up with the speaker's brainwaves in a way that helps them absorb new words.
Babies are constantly bombarded with sounds, faces, and voices. They must figure out which ones matter. The new study, published in the journal Nature Communications, reveals that eye contact is how they make that decision.
The researchers had 42 infants aged 8 to 10 months listen to three made-up languages, each made from nonsense syllables repeated over and over. The same speaker appeared on screen wearing glasses — sometimes clear, sometimes partially shaded, sometimes completely dark — so the babies could or could not see her eyes. While the babies listened, the team used a technique called EEG (electroencephalography), which measures brain electrical activity through a special cap, to track what was happening inside their heads.
The babies heard all three languages, but they only learned one. "They're not just passive sponges," said researcher Victoria Leong of NTU Singapore and the University of Cambridge. "They heard all three languages, but only learned the one, which was when they could see the speaker's eyes." The key finding: when babies could fully see the speaker's eyes, their brainwaves synchronized with hers — and that synchrony was a better predictor of learning than even the babies' own brain activity.
Dr. Kaili Clackson from the University of Cambridge put it plainly: "Even when the infants seemed to be staring at a screen attentively, unless there was eye contact, nothing was going in — the information washed over them."
The same results appeared in babies from both Cambridge and Singapore, suggesting this is a universal human trait, not something shaped by culture. The findings give parents and caregivers a simple message: when you look your baby in the eyes and talk, you are not just sharing sounds — you are opening a gate in their brain that lets language pour in.
