When Indigenous communities speak, AI is starting to listen. A growing body of research shows how ancient Indigenous values like balance, harmony, and guardianship could reshape how artificial intelligence is built and used — and in some places, that vision is already becoming reality.

In Brazil, the Yanomami people now use drones to patrol their territory, watching for illegal gold miners who have caused a humanitarian and environmental crisis. In the Congo Basin and Indonesia, Indigenous groups are working with AI tools to track the causes of deforestation. These communities are not waiting for technology to arrive on their terms — they are taking charge of it.

A recent study published in the journal AI and Ethics examined how two Indigenous philosophies could guide AI development. The Navajo concept of Hózhó means balance and harmony. The Māori word Kaitiakitanga refers to guardianship and stewardship. Both traditions emphasize that humans are not separate from nature — we belong to it and must protect it.

Researchers argue these ideas could push AI developers to ask hard questions about the environmental costs of their technology. Large AI systems require massive data centers that consume huge amounts of water and energy. But Indigenous communities have a different relationship with natural resources. Sebastián Lehuedé, a researcher at King's College London, observed that Indigenous groups often view water and land as sacred parts of life, not products to be bought and sold.

That perspective has real power. When Indigenous communities organized against a planned Google data center in Chile, they succeeded in stopping it. Their argument? The project would have drained local water supplies for profit, treating shared resources as mere commodities.

Yet experts warn that simply writing Indigenous values into academic papers is not enough. "The specific, irreducible, culturally grounded content of both systems is precisely what gets lost in this process," said Karaitiana Taiuru, an Indigenous data sovereignty expert who leads Taiuru and Associates Ltd in New Zealand. He argues that non-Indigenous developers should not be the ones translating complex knowledge systems into technology rules. That, he said, is a form of what researchers call digital colonialism.

Nicole Horseherder, a Navajo environmental activist, shares similar concerns. She told Mongabay that thousands of years of careful human observation cannot easily be translated into software code. "Maybe it can provide information on Indigenous communities," she said of AI, "but it will never be an extension of our existence."

Still, there is reason for hope. The most meaningful path forward, Taiuru said, is genuine participation — not just representation — so Indigenous communities have real control over how AI is designed and used in their lands. As AI continues to grow, the choices these communities make today could help shape a more responsible future for everyone.
