In a quiet forest in Belgium, researchers tracked the movements of Bombus humilis — the buff-tailed bumblebee — across a decade. Between 2012 and 2022, they recorded thousands of sightings. But all that data sat in databases, disconnected and hard to use, until a team across Europe decided to change that.
The EU project B-Cubed, short for Building Biodiversity Blocks for Policy, launched in March 2023 with a simple but powerful goal: turn raw species data into clear insights that policymakers can actually use. Their secret? Automated tools that organize the chaos.
Think of it like building with blocks. Each "species occurrence cube" stacks data — location, time, species type — into neat, comparable units. A researcher studying bumblebees in Belgium can now compare their findings with someone tracking wolves in Spain, without spending months cleaning up messy datasets first.
"We created a service on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, or GBIF, that automates this process," the team explains. "Users can turn vast amounts of species occurrence data into custom data cubes."
The impact reaches far beyond convenience. These cubes feed into biodiversity indicators — measurements that show whether species populations are thriving or struggling. B-Cubed's toolkit generates indicators for species occupancy trends, biological invasion assessments, and even something called phylogenetic diversity loss, which measures how many different evolutionary branches are disappearing.
Most exciting? These indicators update constantly. When an invasive species appears or a climate event reshapes an ecosystem, officials get real-time alerts instead of waiting years for outdated reports.
"After data has been analyzed, it can be delivered to policymakers through reports, dashboards and policy-relevant indicators," the project notes. The tools also correct for a sneaky problem called "survey effort bias" — the fact that some areas get studied more than others.
B-Cubed wrapped up by leaving behind something valuable: free guides, tutorials, and technical resources. Scientists, conservation groups, and future biodiversity projects can all tap into these tools. The B-Cubed Legacy Booklet is available now on Zenodo, a public repository.
