When a wall of water comes rushing down a mountain valley, every second counts. For the people of Lunana, a remote region high in the Himalayas of Bhutan, new research shows that the first sign of danger often comes not from a siren or an official alert, but from the sound of the river itself. Scientists from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom have been studying how communities in Lunana receive flood warnings, and their findings are changing how experts think about keeping people safe.

Lunana sits near some of the world's most dangerous glacial lakes — bodies of water formed by melting ice that can suddenly burst through natural dams. As the climate warms, these events are becoming more common and more powerful. Glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, can race through mountain valleys at incredible speed, traveling up to 400 kilometers (250 miles) from where they started, destroying everything in their path.

The research team, led by doctoral student Sonam Rinzin, spoke with people in Lunana who lived through actual flood events in 2019 and 2023. They found that while nearly everyone knew about the risks of GLOFs — thanks to years of government education programs — many people still felt unprepared when warnings came. During real emergencies, residents often first noticed something was wrong because they heard unusually loud roaring from the river or felt the ground shaking beneath their feet. They then called friends and family on mobile phones and checked social media for more information before deciding to evacuate. Some people said they left so quickly that they did not have time to grab emergency bags with important documents, medication, or other essentials.

Professor Rachel Carr, a glacier expert at Newcastle University, said the study proves that early warning technology is only part of the solution. "These findings have relevance beyond Bhutan," she explained, "as many mountain regions around the world face increasing risks linked to glacial lake hazards as our climate changes."

The good news is that the research team is already putting their findings into action. Working alongside Bhutan's government and other organizations, they are building a network of low-cost sensors that can monitor glacial lakes in real time. The data from these sensors will be streamed directly to a website that at-risk communities can access, giving people more time to prepare before a flood arrives. The researchers are also working with local schools and community groups to run evacuation drills and make sure everyone knows exactly what to do when warnings come — whether those warnings arrive through official channels, phone calls from loved ones, or the sound of a river that suddenly grows too loud.

The study demonstrates that the most effective warning systems are not just high-tech gadgets sitting on a mountainside. They are networks that connect people to each other, respect the knowledge that locals already have, and give communities the tools they need to act quickly when the moment comes.
