In Venezuela's Parque Nacional Parima-Tapirapeco, thick clouds often hide the fires burning below — a problem that has frustrated rangers for years. But on March 23, 2026, a small satellite caught something previous tools could not: a fire detection through the haze, captured in sharp detail. That satellite was a FireSat Protoflight, part of a new system designed to see what older technology misses.

The nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance launched its first three FireSat satellites in early July, the first step toward a planned network of about 50 low-orbit satellites by 2030. Once fully running, these satellites will deliver images at roughly 5 meters resolution — about the length of a large SUV — as often as every hour, with hopes of cutting that down to 20 minutes by 2030.

That might sound like just a number, but it could make a big difference for firefighters. Existing satellite systems have a tough trade-off: some, like the USGS Landsat and European Sentinel-2, take clear pictures but can take up to two weeks to pass over the same spot again. Others, like NASA's MODIS and VIIRS, scan the whole planet frequently, but their pictures are blurry — a fire has to be pretty big to show up at all.

"Most of the existing civil systems are weather satellites, not specifically fire satellites," said Ann Kapusta, founding principal at Earth Fire Alliance. Because these older systems were not built to detect the heat signatures of fires, smoldering blazes often go unnoticed until they have grown out of control.

The timing matters because fire seasons in South America are expected to get worse before they get better. Record wildfires in 2024 burned through rainforests that had never burned before, filling cities with smoke and causing health problems that lasted for months. An El Niño climate pattern now developing is likely to bring drought and intensified fires through 2027, according to fire experts.

Paul Bodnar, director at the Bezos Earth Fund — which gave a $26 million grant to the program — said that once fully operational, FireSat could help fire agencies cut wildfire emissions worldwide by 5 to 10 percent each year.

For Ricardo Abad, a fire-mapping expert at the Brazilian nonprofit Instituto Socioambiental, the value is about giving firefighters something they do not have now: more time. "We cannot predict where the fire is going to be," he said. "But if we can monitor it with a very high temporal resolution, that gives us more time for response."

Still, experts caution that better data alone cannot solve the problem. In many countries, lack of roads, equipment, and government support make it hard to act on even the best information. The satellites are still being tested and calibrated, with a first group of early adopters — including Instituto Socioambiental — set to receive data in the coming months. Whether that data translates into fewer burning forests will depend on more than technology.
