Somewhere in a museum drawer, a tiny fish sat mislabeled for almost 20 years. No bigger than a thumb, it had been caught by accident in a fishing net off southern Australia in 2006, then filed away among sea creatures without bones. Now, scientists have given it a new name: Australyichthys aegis.

At first glance, you might mistake it for a seahorse. It has the same horse-shaped head, the same curled tail for gripping onto plants, and males even carry their babies in a pouch on their belly. But a new study published in the Journal of Lost Species reveals this fish is not a seahorse at all — it belongs to its own branch of the evolutionary family tree.

Scientists have nicknamed these strange creatures the "sea muppets" because of their quirky looks. Australyichthys aegis is called the helmethead sea muppet, named for the domed crest on its head like a little helmet. Its relatives include the bullneck sea muppet and the paradoxical sea muppet. Together, the three species form a genus that scientists had never noticed before.

The discovery happened thanks to hospital-style X-ray technology called micro-CT scanning. Researchers could look inside the fish without cutting them open — and that's when they spotted something surprising. True seahorses have a rigid cage of fused bony plates and a crown-like structure on their heads. The sea muppets have neither. Their bones are arranged completely differently, revealing they evolved their seahorse-like shape separately — a phenomenon scientists call convergent evolution.

DNA testing confirmed what the bones suggested. One specimen had been preserved in ethanol rather than the usual chemical, leaving its genetic material intact. The genes placed these fish far from the seahorse family tree.

All three species together are known from just seven fish, collected over 65 years across 2,500 kilometers (about 1,550 miles) of Australian coastline. No one has ever seen one alive — they dwell 50 to 125 meters deep, too deep for scuba diving, and have only turned up by accident in fishing nets.

"An entire genus of vertebrate hid there, misidentified, until a CT scanner settled the question," the research team noted. The fish now qualify as "lost species" — not because scientists think they're extinct, but because they've never been observed swimming in the ocean. They exist only in museum collections, waiting to be understood.
