In the misty mountains of western Thailand, scientists have discovered a lizard so special they named it after a dragon from a popular TV show.
The new species, called Acanthosaura syrax, was found living high in the evergreen forests of Mae Wong National Park, at elevations above 1,300 meters (about 4,300 feet). The research team, led by Poramad Trivalairat and colleagues from the Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University, gave the lizard its name after Syrax — the yellow dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in the fantasy series "House of the Dragon." The choice was no accident. The real-life A. syrax shares key traits with its fictional counterpart: it has yellowish-green coloring, is one of the smallest in its group, and lays unusually large clutches of eggs for its size.
The lizard belongs to a family called mountain horned dragons, recognizable by the spiny crests running along their necks and backs. But A. syrax stands out even among its relatives — it has the smallest crest scales ever recorded in the entire genus. It also lacks the black patch around the eye seen in many related species and wears a distinctive dark collar marking.
DNA testing confirmed what the researchers spotted with their own eyes: this lizard is genetically distinct from its closest relative, A. lepidogaster, and from every other known species in the group. The discovery brings the total number of known species in the genus Acanthosaura to 23.
The find is not just scientifically exciting — it may also help protect an entire ecosystem. The Syrax mountain horned dragon appears to live only in a narrow band of high-altitude forest, making it especially vulnerable if its habitat faces threats. Researchers are now calling for stronger protection of these mountain forests, suggesting the new lizard could become a flagship species — an animal that draws attention to the need for conservation. Other rare creatures sharing these peaks include the Asian forest tortoise, Oldham's leaf turtle, and the Indochinese tiger.
