A pen that feels ordinary in a child's hand is quietly doing extraordinary work. Called the THInkPen, it looks and writes just like any other pen — but hidden inside are sensors that track everything from pressure on the paper to the tilt of the pen as a young hand moves across the page. Researchers in Italy built it to catch writing difficulties early, and after testing it on more than 700 schoolchildren, they believe it could change how and when kids get the help they need.
Why does this matter? Writing is one of the first big skills children learn, yet millions struggle with conditions like dysgraphia, a difficulty that makes handwriting slow, messy, and tiring. Spotting these problems early makes a huge difference — but it's far from easy. Today, a child usually gets evaluated only after weeks or months of visible struggle, often at clinics with long waiting lists.
The THInkPen was developed by Politecnico di Milano and the University of Insubria (in the Italian cities of Varese and Como). In their study, published in the journal PLOS Digital Health, more than 700 primary and lower secondary school students used the pen while completing two tasks from the BVSCO-3, the most widely used test in Italy for assessing writing difficulties. As they wrote, the pen's sensors captured details no paper test ever could: pressure, movement fluency, pen inclination, and the frequency of signals sent through its sensors.
The results were striking. Digital indicators from the pen matched the clinical scores closely, confirming the sensors reliably reflect how a child writes. Artificial intelligence models successfully told apart students with writing difficulties from those without, and explainable AI techniques revealed the reasons behind below-average performance — opening the door to targeted help. The data even mirrored the natural improvement in writing seen from one school grade to the next, showing the pen is sensitive enough to track a child's development over time.
For Simona Ferrante, a professor at Politecnico di Milano and coordinator of the research team, the beauty of the tool is that it analyzes not just the final written product but the entire writing process. That matters because Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry services are overwhelmed, with long waiting lists. As Dr. Cristiano Termine, professor of child neuropsychiatry at the University of Insubria, points out, school difficulties are among the top reasons children are referred for assessment — but not every struggle needs a specialist.
A smart pen that helps schools understand which difficulties are serious — and which are simply part of growing — could ease that pressure. The project, patented by Politecnico di Milano with the University of Milan, grew out of research on neurodegenerative diseases and was later adapted for children. Researcher Linda Greta Dui, who won the Tecnovisionaria 2025 Award for this work, helped shape it. With further development, this unassuming pen could one day sit in classrooms across the world, catching writing struggles before they become barriers to learning.
