Every new parent has been there: the 3 a.m. doubt, the wondering whether that tiny grunt meant the baby was truly awake. Now, a researcher in Helsinki has shown that those instincts, however loving, don't always match what's really happening in the crib.
University of Helsinki researcher Sofie de Sena created NAPPA — short for NAPping PAnts — smart pants equipped with sensors that track exactly when infants wake up during the night. The wearable measures three things: body position, breathing, and activity. Unlike a camera or a parent lying awake listening, it watches silently without disturbing the baby.
The results were eye-opening. De Sena compared what parents reported about their children's sleep against what NAPPA actually recorded. She found that mothers and fathers often missed brief awakenings altogether and guessed wrong about how long the longer ones lasted. Babies frequently woke up and fell back asleep in ways that looked like uninterrupted sleep to the people watching over them.
"Direct measurement is the only route to objective understanding of infant sleep," de Sena said in her doctoral thesis.
This matters because nearly half of Finnish parents feel that their infant's sleep is abnormal. But without solid data, it's hard to know whether that concern is warranted. Babies do things during active sleep that look like wakefulness to adult eyes — small movements, soft sounds — yet these are completely normal parts of infant rest.
The research also uncovered something unexpected: the position a baby sleeps in, and how much they shift during the night, connects to their physical development. Movement during sleep appears linked to broader neurological growth, at least when it comes to motor skills. This suggests that those tiny wiggles are doing more than just filling time between dream cycles.
For families, the implications are hopeful. De Sena envisions a future where smart wearables like NAPPA could become routine tools at maternity clinics. Instead of relying solely on parental memory and guesswork, healthcare workers might use objective sleep data to spot developmental concerns earlier or reassure exhausted parents that actually, things are going fine.
"Objective, long-term sleep monitoring at home is a great opportunity to investigate early development in children," de Sena noted. "It also identifies sleep characteristics that are not necessarily conveyed in parental reporting."
The technology won't replace a parent's knowledge of their child, but it could add a layer of precision that helps everyone sleep a little better — babies included.
