Twenty thousand salmon are swimming home. That is how many chinook salmon have migrated up the Klamath River, which flows through southern Oregon and northern California, in the two years since four dams were torn down. The Klamath was not always a welcoming place for fish. For decades, a chain of dams blocked the river, trapping salmon in warm, sluggish pools and cutting them off from the cool spawning grounds upstream. Removing those four dams was a huge project, and scientists expected the river's recovery to take a long time. They were wrong.
"The biological response has been much faster than I, and most of us, expected," said Damon Goodman, the lead author of the study. Fall-run salmon are returning in numbers nobody predicted this quickly, and their arrival is a clear sign the river is healing.
Challenges remain, of course. There are still questions over who gets how much water, and two dams still stand on the river. But the sight of 20,000 salmon pushing upstream is powerful proof that when people remove an obstacle, nature often knows exactly what to do next.
