When the Sierra Club delivered roughly 2,000 comments to Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs last month opposing the Desert Southwest Pipeline, they weren't just fighting another fossil fuel project. They were drawing a line in the sand for a new kind of energy hunger—data centers.
The pipeline would funnel methane gas from the Permian Basin to power sprawling server facilities across the Southwest, including Project Jupiter in southern New Mexico, a single data center campus projected to emit as much greenhouse gas as the region's three largest cities combined. It's the kind of infrastructure that locks in decades of climate-heating emissions just as the world should be racing to cut them.
But here's what's remarkable: the renewable energy revolution is already rendering these debates somewhat moot.
In Europe, wind and solar now supply more electricity than methane-fired generators. The continent has dramatically shifted away from fossil fuels since Russia weaponized energy exports in 2022—and discovered it didn't need to replace Russian methane with any methane at all. According to Reuters, solar and wind in Europe now deliver between 80 and 110 terawatt-hours monthly, while gas generation steadily loses ground. "Methane is the past and renewables are the future," is how one analyst put it.
And while data centers are indeed power-hungry beasts—cooling systems alone can consume up to 40% of a facility's total energy—engineers are getting creative. A new study from the National Laboratory of the Rockies finds that underground thermal energy storage can keep servers cool year-round by capturing cold air in subsurface reservoirs during winter and cool nights, storing enough energy to supply facilities at terawatt-hour scales.
Meanwhile, the electric vehicle revolution continues accelerating globally. In the Philippines, ACMobility just launched charging hubs along major commuter routes to support electric buses—enabling local operators to transition fleets with zero upfront costs, with complete ownership after five years. In China, BYD unveiled new sedan models with 630-kilometer ranges and 240 kW motors at affordable price points.
Even Waymo's peculiar situation tells a story: despite 102.5% tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles, the company has imported 3,200 Zeekr-based robotaxis because they're simply the best option for autonomous mobility.
Back in the American Southwest, communities are making their voices clear. Arizona already ranks among the top states nationally for planned new gas plants, but grassroots opposition is intensifying. The message from those 2,000 comments is unmistakable: data centers can grow, the digital economy can thrive—but not on the backbone of fossil fuels.
The future of computing is electric. And increasingly, that electricity is clean.
