On 400 acres of solar farm, a diesel mechanic traded his wrenches for a shepherd's crook — and it's a deal that works for both sides.

For years, this 27-year-old Tennessean spent his days fixing diesel engines and his spare time tending a small flock of sheep. Like many young farmers, he dreamed of ranching full-time but was priced out. In East and Middle Tennessee, rising land prices and suburban growth have pushed farmland costs beyond what most first-time farmers can afford. Without inherited family land or a pile of cash, young producers often have to keep day jobs, making farming a side hustle instead of a life's work.

Then he found an unlikely partner: solar farms.

Through what's called agrivoltaics — using farmland beneath solar panels for grazing — the young farmer signed vegetation management contracts that gave his sheep more than 400 acres of fenced pasture. That space let his flock grow past 300 breeding ewes, and the contract income gave him the financial security to quit the mechanic job and farm full-time. No land purchase required.

Here's how the system works. Solar developers surround their sites with strong fencing and often install water systems and plant grass and clover between the rows of panels. Sheep move in to keep the vegetation trimmed below the panels, where plants could interfere with solar equipment. Farmers win because they get pasture. Solar companies win because they avoid the cost and risk of fuel-powered mowing — tractors and mowers can strike panels and support structures, while sheep graze safely around the steel posts.

Sheep are perfectly sized for the job. Unlike cattle and horses, they can slip under the low-lying panels and reach spots where mowers can't safely go. The arrangement also allows rotational grazing, where sheep move between fenced sections so the grass recovers — which can lower parasite pressure on the flock.

This isn't a one-off. Data from the American Solar Grazing Association shows livestock now manage vegetation across tens of thousands of acres of solar installations nationwide, with grazing used at utility-scale sites in more than two dozen states. Regional advocacy group Appalachian Voices reports the practice is giving small livestock farmers across the American South a new path into the business.

There are environmental perks too: higher organic matter in the topsoil, better water retention, fewer mowing emissions, and more room for soil organisms and pollinators when flowering plants grow between grazing cycles. Advocates say combining agriculture with solar development also eases a common worry about large renewable projects — that they strip farmland out of production. Instead of taking land away from agriculture, solar sites keep grazing animals and crops going while generating clean electricity.

For a young man in rural Tennessee, a field full of solar panels turned out to be a field full of opportunity — and the chance to finally make farming his day job.
