When Huawei started working on car technology, nobody expected the Chinese tech giant to become a major player in electric vehicles. But the numbers from the first seven months of 2026 tell a different story. Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance has delivered 286,000 electric vehicles so far this year — a 13.7 percent jump compared to the same period last year. July alone saw 45,046 deliveries roll out across the alliance's network of partner brands.

What makes Huawei's approach unusual is that it never set out to build cars under its own name. Instead, the company acts as what the auto industry calls a Tier 1 supplier — a major parts provider — while also partnering with existing automakers to create joint brands. Huawei supplies the brainy stuff: autonomous driving software, digital dashboards, and electric powertrains. The physical vehicles get assembled by manufacturers like Chery, Changan, and Dongfeng, companies with decades of experience building cars.

The strategy seems to be working. Luxeed, a brand Huawei created with Chery Automobile, contributed 10,709 vehicles to July's total. Those cars join a growing lineup that now spans 50 different models across 25 automotive brands — everything from budget-friendly six-seaters to ultra-luxury executive sedans.

Behind the commercial momentum sits a massive engineering bet. At an April technology conference in Beijing, Jin Yuzhi, who leads Huawei's Intelligent Automotive Solution division, outlined an 18 billion yuan (about $2.63 billion) global budget for intelligent driving research and development in 2026. More than half of that money — 10 billion yuan — went toward cloud computing infrastructure. Training self-driving software requires enormous computing power, and Huawei has been building out its capacity rapidly. The company's cloud compute capacity grew from 2.8 EFLOPS in 2023 to 60 EFLOPS by April, with plans to invest up to 80 billion yuan in computing power over the next five years.

That investment is already showing up on the road. By mid-July, Huawei's Qiankun smart driving platform was running on 1.9 million vehicles across China. The system uses an 896-line lidar sensor — essentially a laser eye that can spot obstacles as small as 14 centimeters (about the height of a coffee mug) from 120 meters away. Automakers have been racing to put the technology in new models. Dongfeng Motor unveiled the Yijing X9, a flagship luxury SUV with dual 17-inch cabin displays. The Baojun Huajing S, a six-seat plug-in hybrid built with SAIC-GM-Wuling, can travel up to 255 kilometers on electricity alone and over 1,100 kilometers total before needing to refuel. Pre-sales for the Avatr 07L — co-developed with Changan Automobile — opened in July with the full autonomous driving suite.

Looking ahead, development continues on the Maextro S800, an ultra-luxury sedan created with Jianghuai Automobile Group. It will sit at the top of the alliance's offerings, alongside established brands like Aito (partnered with Seres) and Stelato (partnered with BAIC). With Chinese drivers increasingly moving toward electric and connected vehicles, Huawei is betting that its software-first approach can carve out a major role in the industry's future.
