On a sweltering August day in 2025, flames ripped through parts of Southern Europe. Scientists have long warned that climate change would make wildfires worse, but a new study reveals a surprising twist: conditions for wildfires have more than doubled since 1981, yet fewer fires are actually burning. The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggests that Southern European countries are getting much better at stopping fires before they start.

Raúl Cordero and a team of researchers analyzed wildfire records from Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Greece over 44 years, from 1981 to 2025. They found that in parts of France and Spain, the weather conditions that encourage fires — heat, dryness, and wind — had grown about 50 percent stronger between 2016 and 2025 compared to the earlier period. In the 1980s, fewer than 10 summer days each year created the perfect setup for wildfires. Today, that number has jumped to around 25 days per summer in the same regions.

So why aren't we seeing more infernos? The study points to smarter wildfire management. Fire brigades now receive better training, and public awareness campaigns have helped communities prepare. These efforts seem to be paying off: despite the doubled danger, the annual number of fires across all five countries has fallen by roughly 40 percent compared to the 1980s and 1990s.

The researchers also traced some of the hot, dry weather patterns to large climate systems. Smaller differences in air pressure over the North Atlantic drove more fire-friendly conditions in Greece, Italy, Corsica, and Spain. Meanwhile, sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific linked to the El Niño weather pattern preceded dangerous fire weather in northwestern Iberia, Sicily, and southern Greece.

The scientists caution that while fewer fires are occurring, the ones that do ignite may be harder to control because they are starting in more extreme conditions. They recommend continuing to improve fire management, including controlled burns to clear out dead vegetation before summer, and designing landscapes that can better withstand hotter, drier weather. The message is cautiously optimistic: humanity's response to wildfire risk is making a real difference, even as the climate grows more hostile.
