In the Great Lakes Basin, where forests meet water and countless species call home, scientists have uncovered a secret weapon nature uses to survive hard times: diversity itself.

Researchers from Canada and the United States have discovered how ecosystems stay strong against climate change and other disruptions. The answer lies in what they call "portfolio effects" — natural variation across species, habitats, and ecological roles that acts like insurance for the whole system.

Think of it like a diversified investment portfolio. If you put all your money into one stock and it crashes, you lose everything. But if your money is spread across many different investments, a loss in one area won't ruin you. Ecosystems work the same way, according to the research team.

"Ecosystem resilience is not just about having many species, but about maintaining the variation within and across scales that helps the individual organisms, species and ecosystems persist and adapt," said lead author Kayla RS Hale.

The scientists, working with the Centre for Ecosystem Management along with researchers from Cornell University, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, published their findings in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

What they found is that when ecosystems have diverse habitats — forests, wetlands, meadows, and more — a disaster like a wildfire or flood rarely hits every area at once. The healthy parts can support the damaged ones while they recover. Similarly, when different species and populations exist in the same area, some will thrive while others struggle, but the community as a whole keeps functioning.

The problem is that human activities are shrinking this natural variation. Land development, invasive species, and intensive resource extraction all make ecosystems more uniform. When that happens, ecosystems lose their ability to absorb shocks.

"This work highlights biodiversity and habitat heterogeneity as a form of natural insurance," Hale explained. "Protecting this variation helps maintain the capacity of ecosystems to respond to both expected and unexpected environmental challenges."

The researchers say this means conservation efforts need to look beyond protecting single species or individual patches of habitat. Instead, they should focus on preserving the variety of life and connected landscapes that allow nature to adapt and bounce back.

The hope is that by monitoring ecosystem diversity and resilience, communities can better prepare for the challenges ahead — relying on nature's own insurance policy to see them through.
