What if your bicycle tires were made from silk?
Researchers in Thailand have done exactly that — and their silk tires outperformed the standard nylon ones in almost every way. The prototype, developed by a team including Nantinee Choosang and colleagues, was 10.5% lighter, lasted 29% longer, and resisted punctures 57% better than regular tires.
The researchers combined natural rubber with fabric reinforcement — either silk or nylon — and bonded the layers using a special coating. They then built actual bicycle tires and put them to the test. The results were striking.
Silk held up far better under stress. Its cord tensile strength — basically how much force the tire's inner structure can take before breaking — was 143% greater than the nylon version. The rubber and silk also stuck together more firmly, which helps the tire stay intact as it rolls over rough roads.
But the benefits went beyond just strength. Using silk also appeared better for the environment, at least within the production steps the researchers examined. Making one kilogram of silk-reinforced tire material produced only 0.79 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent — compared to 5.06 kilograms for the nylon version. That's a significant difference.
So why does silk work so well? The researchers used powerful microscopes to study the material up close. They found that silk fibers are finer than nylon fibers, allowing them to mesh more tightly with the rubber. Silk also contains protein-based molecules that actually bond with the rubber, creating a stronger connection. There were fewer gaps and air pockets where the silk met the rubber, which made the whole structure more solid.
The study, published in the journal ACS Omega, is still early stage. The team only tested materials within the factory walls — they did not account for extracting raw materials, running the machines, or what happens when the tire eventually wears out. The researchers also acknowledge that they need real-world testing on actual roads before anyone can say for sure how the tires perform over months of use.
Still, the results suggest that natural silk — the same material found in elegant fabric — might one day make bicycles lighter, stronger, and more sustainable. The researchers plan to study larger-scale production and improve how silk bonds with rubber. One day, your next set of bike tires might come from the humble silkworm.
