In the first five months of 2026, something remarkable happened in American energy: solar panels produced more electricity in a single month than either coal or wind. That month was May. And it was not a fluke.

New data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that renewable energy sources — solar, wind, hydropower, and more — provided more than 30% of all electricity generated in the United States during the first five months of 2026. That is the first time renewables have crossed that threshold for such an extended period. Just one year earlier, the figure was 28.2%, meaning clean energy grew by more than two percentage points in a single year.

The growth is being driven mostly by solar. Utility-scale solar generation (that is, large solar farms) jumped 21.6% compared to the same period in 2025. Small-scale solar, like rooftop panels on homes and businesses, rose 12.8%. Wind grew by 4.8%, and hydropower added 10.8%. Together, wind and solar now produce more electricity than the nation's coal plants — 57% more, in fact. They also outpace nuclear reactors by 26%.

Behind these numbers is real infrastructure being built across the country. Over the past year, renewable energy capacity in the United States grew by nearly 45,000 megawatts. That is enough new clean energy to power tens of millions of homes. Battery storage, which stores electricity from solar and wind for use when the sun sets or the wind stops blowing, expanded by more than 16,500 megawatts.

The trend shows no signs of slowing. The EIA projects that by May 2027, renewable energy sources will add roughly 83 gigawatts of new generating capacity across the country. That is nearly double the total installed solar capacity the entire country had just a decade ago. If small-scale solar continues to grow as it has, renewable energy capacity could actually surpass natural gas by spring 2027 — a milestone that seemed distant just a few years ago.

Coal, meanwhile, continues to decline. U.S. coal plants produced 10.9% less electricity than they did a year ago, and coal capacity shrank by more than 2,200 megawatts. Nuclear capacity also fell slightly.

The shift matters for the air people breathe and the climate they leave to future generations. But it also matters for energy independence and the economy: every megawatt of homegrown sun and wind does not need to be imported from elsewhere. Despite political headwinds, the numbers tell a clear story — American energy is being rebuilt around clean sources, one solar panel and one wind turbine at a time.
