A tiny chick, barely bigger than a golf ball, huddles in a grassy field in Scotland, waiting for a parent to bring it food. That chick is a lapwing, one of the U.K.'s most beloved farmland birds, and its survival may depend on something as simple as when a farmer decides to mow the grass.
New research from the University of Aberdeen and Edinburgh Napier University has found that small tweaks to the timing of conservation measures on farmland could give these ground-nesting birds a major boost. The findings, published this week in the Journal of Applied Ecology, carry hope for species like the lapwing, oystercatcher and curlew — birds that once filled the British countryside with their calls but have vanished at alarming speed.
The numbers tell a stark story. Between 1995 and 2024, Scotland's lapwing population fell by 63%, its curlew by 62%, and its oystercatcher by 41%. A big reason is how farmers manage their fields. Grass is being mowed earlier and more often, and livestock graze densely in some areas. For birds that nest on the ground, this is deadly — eggs and chicks are crushed by machinery or trampled by cows and sheep before they can fledge, or grow enough feathers to fly.
The U.K. has schemes that pay farmers to delay mowing or grazing to protect birds. But here's the problem: these "exclusion dates" are applied the same way across each country. The researchers, using nesting data from the British Trust for Ornithology, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, showed that birds don't follow a one-size-fits-all calendar. Breeding seasons vary a lot between species and across regions, so the protection often comes at the wrong time.
Leah Gray, the postgraduate researcher who led the study, called the fix an "easy win." The team's new recommendations tailor conservation timing to each species and location. Shifting current exclusion dates by just two to three weeks could make a huge difference. Their analysis found nest protection from livestock could jump by 30% for lapwing and 57% for oystercatcher. Protection of chicks from mowing could rise by 35% for lapwing and a remarkable 72% for oystercatcher.
Gray explained that waders simply aren't producing enough chicks to keep their numbers up. While threats like habitat loss and predation are complex, agricultural losses are far easier to fix. Grazing and mowing changes are among the most effective tools available.
"This means nests and chicks can still be lost unnecessarily, despite schemes specifically designed to protect them," she said, "The encouraging finding is that relatively small changes to existing schemes could make a substantial difference."
The research was built to directly inform NatureScot, which advises the Scottish Government on its agri-environment scheme. The goal is practical: help farmers protect wildlife while keeping their farms working. Getting it right will take close cooperation between policymakers, farmers and ecologists. But the message is clear — sometimes the smallest change to a mowing schedule can save a nest full of chicks.
