Olivia Breen turned 30 on the eve of the biggest race of her season. Then she went out and ran one of the tightest finishes of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The Team Wales captain took silver in the T38 100 meters on Sunday, edging England's Maddie Down in a photo-finish by mere centimeters. Her time of 12.86 seconds — a season's best — made her the first Welsh athlete to earn a medal in athletics at these Games.
"That wait around was nerve-wracking, but it was amazing and I'm really happy with how I ran," Breen said after the race.
Breen was the defending champion in this event, having won gold at the last Commonwealth Games in 2022. But England's Sophie Hahn, a rival Breen has faced for years, crossed the line just ahead of her this time.
What makes this medal special goes beyond the result. Earlier this year, Breen battled concussions and injuries that threatened her season.
"I'm really happy with the performance — I kept myself together, kept my form," she said. "I was determined, I left it all on the track."
This silver marks Breen's fourth Commonwealth medal across her career, adding to a collection that includes two golds and a bronze. She is now one of Wales' most decorated Paralympic athletes, having also competed at multiple world championships.
Beyond her own race, Breen has been cheering on her teammates. Wales entered the final day of competition with seven total medals in Glasgow — two silvers and five bronze. She watched the swimmers and gymnasts with pride from the stands before returning to her captaincy duties.
"The swimmers are doing really well, the gymnasts and there's many more to come," Breen said. "I'm really excited to go and support the team tomorrow and see what Wales can do."
For Breen, the medal means even more because of how hard she had to fight to get here. After turning 30 — and after months of rehabilitation — she proved she can still compete at the highest level. With more events still to come in Glasgow, she plans to be courtside, not on the track, cheering on her country.
