When Dr. Anjali Chakraborty caught COVID-19 in 2020, she expected to recover within weeks. Five years later, the GP and mother of two is still living with the condition, which has affected her heart, lungs, skin, brain, joints, and more. She has had a blood clot in her lungs, developed a condition called POTS, and experienced so many strange symptoms that she lost count. "I've had lots and lots of very strange things, medically," she said.
But there is reason for hope. A groundbreaking new study from England has found that specialist NHS long COVID clinics are helping patients like Chakraborty feel better.
The study, called STIMULATE-ICP, is the largest clinical trial of long COVID care ever conducted. Researchers from University College London and UCLH tracked more than 1,100 patients receiving treatment at six NHS long COVID clinics across England. The findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine.
Patients who attended the specialist clinics showed meaningful improvements in fatigue after 12 weeks of care, regardless of whether they also received additional MRI scans or a digital rehabilitation program. Fatigue is one of the most common and disabling symptoms of long COVID, affecting millions of people worldwide and making it hard to work, care for family, or carry out everyday activities.
The study also tested whether adding comprehensive multi-organ MRI scans to standard care would help. Surprisingly, the scans did not improve fatigue or quality of life compared with specialist care alone. Researchers think this may be because doctors do not yet know the best way to treat the problems these scans reveal.
A digital rehabilitation program called Living With COVID Recovery showed small but statistically significant improvements in both fatigue and quality of life after 24 weeks. This suggests digital tools could play a useful role in longer-term support for long COVID patients.
Professor Amitava Banerjee, a cardiologist at UCL and UCLH who helped lead the research, said the findings prove that specialist, multidisciplinary care can make a real difference. "Long COVID continues to affect millions of people and places a considerable burden on patients and health services," he said. "Our findings show that specialist, multidisciplinary long COVID care can make a real difference to patients' fatigue."
Dr. Melissa Heightman, clinical lead for the post-COVID service at UCLH, said the study helps doctors understand which parts of care provide the greatest benefit. "Long COVID is a complex condition and there is no single solution that works for everyone," she said. "Studies like STIMULATE-ICP help us understand which parts of care provide the greatest benefit, allowing us to focus NHS resources where they can make the biggest difference."
For Dr. Chakraborty, the UCLH long COVID service helped her return to work and reclaim parts of her life. When she first attended the clinic, her children were toddlers. "There's been the health aspect of it, and then there's been the life aspect of it," she said. "There has been a real coming to terms with the loss of my identity as a healthy functioning working person in society."
The study offers real evidence that specialized care works, giving patients and health systems a clearer path forward.
