In Kern County, California, a massive solar farm called Bellefield is quietly rewriting America's energy story. In December 2025, it flipped the switch on 500 megawatts of solar panels paired with 500 megawatts of battery storage — enough power to light up hundreds of thousands of homes. Now, engineers are racing to double that capacity by November 2026. If they succeed, Bellefield will become the largest battery storage facility in the entire United States.
That ambition reflects a broader surge sweeping across the country. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, American battery storage capacity has been growing at a breathtaking 70 percent per year for the past three years running. By the end of 2025, the power grid held 43.6 gigawatts of operational battery storage. In just the first half of 2026, operators added another 8.3 gigawatts, pushing the total to nearly 52 gigawatts — enough to replace several large power plants worth of fossil fuel generation.
The momentum shows no sign of slowing. Utilities and developers have told the government they plan to hook up another 54 gigawatts of battery storage over the next two and a half years: 14 gigawatts by the end of 2026, 26 gigawatts in 2027, and another 14 gigawatts in 2028.
Why does this matter? Clean energy sources like solar and wind don't produce electricity around the clock. The sun goes down, the wind calms. Batteries change that equation. They let operators stash electricity when prices are cheap — often mid-day when solar panels flood the grid — and sell it back when demand spikes and prices climb. It's a win for the grid's reliability and a win for profit margins.
The top storage projects paint a picture of this solar-storage partnership in action. The Manatee Solar Energy Center in Florida has been running since 2021 with 75 megawatts of solar capacity backed by 409 megawatts of battery storage, making it the nation's second-largest storage site. The Gemini Solar Hybrid in Nevada pairs 690 megawatts of solar panels with 380 megawatts of batteries.
Together, these projects represent something larger: a transformation of how America stores and uses energy, one battery at a time.
