BYD just posted its second-best month ever for pure electric vehicle sales—and it's part of a much bigger story.

In July 2026, BYD sold 233,105 pure battery-electric vehicles—its second-best month ever, a 31% jump year over year. The world's largest EV maker had stumbled through early 2026, but this was the rebound everyone was waiting for. "With hot new models hitting the markets and supply issues getting worked out, expect the coming months to do a good job getting the company back into the black," CleanTechnica noted.

But BYD's resurgence is just one river feeding a much larger ocean.

Charging an Entire Infrastructure

Across China, the humble gas station is having an existential crisis—and a reinvention. Sinopec, the country's largest fuel retailer with more than 30,000 service stations, signed a framework agreement with BYD to deploy second-generation Flash charging hardware alongside existing fuel pumps. In the Philippines, Unioil was among the early adopters converting stations into "multi-modal power hubs." Shell has Recharge. Total is now TotalEnergies. As CleanTechnica reported from trips across Asia, "energy providers are capitalizing on existing, strategically located real estate by converting fuel stations into multi-modal power hubs."

The Technology Race

Meanwhile, Huawei is spending $2.63 billion on intelligent driving R&D in 2026—$1.46 billion of that on cloud infrastructure alone to train autonomous systems. Through its Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, Huawei provides autonomous driving platforms, digital cockpits, and electric powertrains to partner manufacturers like Chery Automobile, which delivered 45,046 vehicles in July. That's not a car company; it's an automotive operating system.

Volkswagen is getting in on the platform game too. SAIC Volkswagen just filed its first fully electric ID. ERA vehicle—the ID. ERA 5X SUV—built on the CEA (China Electronic Architecture) developed with XPENG. Pre-sales begin August 11.

Storage Gets Serious

While vehicles grab headlines, the grid is quietly transforming. U.S. battery storage capacity grew at an annual average rate of 70% over the last three years, reaching 52 gigawatts by mid-2026. Operators have plans to add another 54 GW over the next two and a half years. The Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm in California couples 500 MW of solar with 500 MW of battery storage. The Energy Department’s National Laboratory of the Rockies just earned four R&D 100 Awards for innovations including ALTRIOS, the first validated open-source digital twin for freight rail systems.

Back From the Dead

Not every story is pure greenfield growth. New Zealand was once called the "Norway of the Pacific" for EV adoption—until a conservative government scrapped tax incentives and imposed road charges. EV market share crashed from 37.7% in December 2023 to 2% in January 2024. "Sounds like another country we know," CleanTechnica quipped. But the market is surging back: battery electric car sales have jumped 231% over the same month last year, with plugin vehicles nudging 30% penetration again. Dealers ran out of used EVs as fossil fuel prices hit $NZ 3.00-3.15 per liter.

Robotaxis Hit the Road

And then there's Zoox. The Amazon-backed company just received NHTSA approval to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis and—crucially—charge passengers for rides. Service starts in Las Vegas next week. Zoox has already transported more than 1 million passengers over 3 million miles in autonomous vehicles across Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami. Its share of the U.S. robotaxi market has grown from 15% in January to 25% by June 2026.

The Takeaway

Look at these eight stories together and a pattern emerges: the EV revolution isn't happening in one place or one way. It's sales rebounds and charging infrastructure, government labs and startup disruptors, policy reversals and recoveries, billion-dollar R&D bets and million-mile autonomous fleets. The infrastructure is being built, the technology is scaling, the market is responding—and it's happening faster than the skeptics predicted.
