The robot could move a drum set, sort a sea of color-coded musical notes, and plug cables together — all without a single human hand. That clever machine, dreamed up by three elementary school students from Cebu, just beat 110 rival teams to take the grand prize at the World Robot Olympiad Korea Nationals. And in doing so, they made history as the very first Filipino team to ever win the award.

The competition ran from August 7 to 10 at the Osong Convention Center in Cheongju, South Korea. For the students of Marie Ernestine School (MESch) in Cebu — Ian Jung, Emmanuel B. Omolon, and Gabriele B. Omolon — it was the result of months of tinkering, testing, and teamwork under the guidance of their coach, Aldefonso Cujardo Sausa.

Teams from all over Asia gathered for the event, including two from Cebu alone. But it was MESch's design that stole the show: a robot built to transport musical equipment, sort color-coded musical notes, and connect cables. It was a task that demanded steady motors, sharp sensors, and smart programming — and this pint-sized crew delivered.
