Twenty-three-year-old Emma Finucane has done something no sprint cyclist has ever done before. At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, she became the first sprint cyclist to win four gold medals at a single Games. She earned her golds in the team sprint, individual sprint, 1,000-meter time trial, and the keirin event — all in the span of just four days, competing at the Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Finucane, from Wales, crossed the finish line ahead of Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews from New Zealand in the keirin final to claim her fourth gold. Andrews had been defending her Commonwealth keirin title from the Birmingham Games in 2022.
The achievement put Finucane in rarefied air. Before her, only Australian legend Anna Meares and New Zealand's Andrews had won three track titles at a single Commonwealth Games, doing so in 2010 and 2022 respectively. In Birmingham, New Zealand cyclist Aaron Gate did win four golds, but three came on the track and one on the road — making Finucane's all-track accomplishment uniquely historic.
Finucane is now Wales' most successful female athlete in Commonwealth Games history, overtaking Para-sprinter Olivia Breen, who had briefly held the record for just two days. She is also Wales' most successful female athlete in Games history. Weightlifter David Morgan still holds the overall Welsh record with nine golds and three silvers.
Her four consecutive victories helped Wales reach their 31st medal of the Games: nine gold, ten silver, and twelve bronze. Finucane's performance has sparked celebration across Wales and the cycling world, with many already calling her one of the greatest sprint cyclists the Commonwealth Games have ever seen.
